It’s Not Your Fault

But it is your responsibility.

Life isn’t always fair.

Some people are born with health challenges. Others develop injuries, chronic conditions, or diseases they never asked for. Genetics play a role. So do age, stress, work schedules, and life circumstances.

We don’t always get to choose what happens to us. But we do get to choose what happens next. That’s where responsibility comes in. Notice I didn’t say fault. Many of the things that affect our health aren’t our fault. But they are still our responsibility.

If your doctor tells you your blood pressure is high, it isn’t your doctor’s responsibility to lower it.

If your cholesterol is elevated, your spouse can’t fix it for you.

If your knees hurt, your coach can help guide you, but they can’t do your exercises for you.

The people in your corner can educate you, encourage you, and support you. They just can’t make your choices.

The Small Decisions Matter

Your health isn’t determined by one workout. Or one salad. Or one bad weekend. It’s built through hundreds of ordinary decisions that often don’t feel very important in the moment. Going for the walk instead of staying on the couch. Choosing water instead of another soda. Getting to bed a little earlier. Showing up to the gym when you don’t feel like it. Packing your lunch instead of grabbing fast food.

None of those decisions are glamorous. But together, they change lives.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect

Taking responsibility doesn’t mean expecting perfection. It means refusing to give your circumstances the final say. Maybe you’ve never exercised before. Maybe you’re starting over after years away. Maybe you’ve tried every diet under the sun and you’re tired of failing.

Okay. Now what?

That’s the question that moves us forward.

Not “Why did this happen?”

Not “Whose fault is it?”

Just…

“What can I do today?”

Maybe today’s step is a 10-minute walk. Maybe it’s signing up for your first class. Maybe it’s eating one balanced meal. Small steps still count.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

Here’s the good news. Taking responsibility doesn’t mean doing everything by yourself. As coaches, we’re here to teach, encourage, and hold you accountable. Your gym community can cheer you on. Your family can support you. But no one can care more about your health than you do.

That’s empowering. Because it means your future isn’t determined by your past. It’s shaped by the choices you make from this point forward.

The Bottom Line

You can’t change your genetics. You can’t change your age. You can’t change yesterday’s choices. But you can choose what happens today. And today’s choices have a funny way of becoming tomorrow’s results. Take ownership of what you can control. Keep showing up. Keep making the next good decision. Your future self will be glad you did.
